Here’s what I think about your sales kickoff's current format.

You have an expensive room filled with sales, marketing, executives, partners, and customers. Sitting for three days watching and listening to sales, marketing, executives, partners, customers (and others, including an analyst or two) present three days of sales, marketing, executive, partner, industry, and customer content.

All of that stuff — all of that content — is presented for six- seven- or eight-hours a kickoff day by far too many from sales, marketing, the C-Suite, partner companies, client companies, analyst firms with mediocre (at best) to mind-numbing (at worst) tune-out and drop-out public speaking and presentation skills. 

To live, virtual, hybrid, and on-demand audiences. For three days.

But wait, there’s more! You want an example? Sure, here ya go!

After a minute or two of the opening cheerleading session by the CEO, look around the room. You’ll start to see members of the audience engage their mobile devices. Laptops, tablets, and phones. And you can guess what the people tuning in remotely are doing — even if their cameras are required to be turned on. That’s because your CEO can’t and won’t hold an audience with outdated approaches to PowerPoint and ill-prepared presentations. Nobody will. Especially with a CMO who doesn't understand any of this.
