Yet you call yourself a marketing leader.

I'm Tony Compton. Welcome to my marketing podcast.

It wasn't terribly long ago that I watched yet another business presentation given by yet another panel of business experts. But this time it was in a formal business event environment, one that I paid to attend. One panelist in particular used filler words throughout the session. Uh-huh. You know. Right. Damaging to the speaker's personal brand, frustrating for the audience. Yet, I have no doubt somebody at that speaker's company proudly states on their LinkedIn profile that they are a marketing leader. The same marketing leader that allowed that speaker to represent their company with no public speaking prep and no presentation coaching. The same marketing leader that's supposed to provide help with public speaking and presentations so that their marketing doesn't get crushed in places like that panel discussion or a coffee shop. I can't even remember if that speaker was able to connect their company name to what they did. Lots of cost, opportunity lost.

I once read a story about four up and coming Chicago tech companies and what makes their sales efforts so successful. Not one company mentioned speaking or presentation skills. You'd think any business developer would need great speaking skills during any given sales pursuit. But not one mention of practicing the company pitch or practicing public speaking skills or practicing much of anything having to do with communication skills. Yet I have no doubt self proclaimed marketing leaders exist at those companies. And I would think that the marketing department stands a great chance to be the first stop for anybody looking for public speaking help.

Not long ago, I attended one of the major trade shows in Las Vegas. By my estimate 80% - and I'm being kind - of the speakers on various stages were adrift.

Your CEO may be oblivious. Your training department offers a two-day presentation training course six months from now, maybe and your CMO probably doesn't want to help even if the desire is there. Often it isn't. And it leaves you, the employee, with nowhere to turn for your next presentation. So what happens you're sent on-stage adrift. The result? Somebody, somewhere is claiming to be a marketing leader. While their people are out trying but unfortunately, undercutting their brand, credibility and reputation.

Marketing leaders get their colleagues ready. They help.

I have a specific idea where two industries can get together to solve marketing and presentation and go to market challenges. Which I'll discuss on my next podcast. That'll be experienced down to business and right to the point.
